We don’t always realize how we impact people with our lives, especially the way we live for Christ and share the gospel with others, which he has called us to do. In these verses from the beginning of Paul’s letter to the church he planted at Philippi in Macedonia, Paul is imprisoned in Rome and from that context is writing these God-inspired words.

Although imprisoned, Paul is rejoicing that his imprisonment is actually advancing the gospel! Why? Because everyone, including the guards, knows that he is in prison because of Jesus Christ. He is literally rejoicing because of this.

This fact is so powerful because both the guards and everyone else have a lesson in the fearlessness of the gospel right before them. Not only that, other believers are strengthened because of his firm stand for the gospel.

It may be that your life situation takes a turn for the worst, but be reminded that the way you conduct yourself in those times of trial can be one of the greatest ways God can use you to further his gospel in this world.

Paul actually describes this suffering in persecution for Christ as a gift a few verses later, which is a thought that is hard for the modern believer to wrap their brain around. But this is often God’s method and God’s methods always require us to trust him as it confounds the world.

And his way always brings the power of the gospel to the human heart.

This is why we can rejoice, as Paul did, even during trials.

12 I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my situation has actually turned out to advance the gospel: 13 The whole imperial guard and everyone else knows that I am in prison for the sake of Christ, 14 and most of the brothers and sisters, having confidence in the Lord because of my imprisonment, now more than ever dare to speak the word fearlessly…

27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ so that—whether I come and see you or whether I remain absent—I should hear that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, by contending side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and by not being intimidated in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of their destruction, but of your salvation—a sign which is from God. 29 For it has been granted to you not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are encountering the same conflict that you saw me face and now hear that I am facing.

We can come to know Christ through confession of our sins and repentance (turning away from sin). Let me encourage you to do this by talking to God through prayer. Here is an idea of how you might do that:

"Dear God, I believe your son Jesus Christ died in my place on the cross and rose from the dead on the third day following his death. I confess my sins, all of them, to you now with a humble heart. I repent of those sins and ask you to empower me with your Holy Spirit in overcoming further sin. Amen”

If you prayed this or a similar prayer committing your life to Christ and becoming one of his followers, let me encourage you to find a good, Bible-believing church. If you live in the Weslaco/Rio Grand Valley area of Texas, let me invite you to the church I attend, Mid-Valley Assembly (www.midvalleyassembly.com).

Begin talking to God in prayer and reading the Bible daily. A good way to begin to read the Bible is to start with the Book of John in the New Testament.

Feel very free in connecting with me if you need any further help in your walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. You can do this via the above email or facebook page or this web page. _____________________________________________________________________________
