Endurance

Updated: Feb 8, 2023

When you are reading through scripture and run into the word “therefore,” always ask the question, “What is the "therefore" there for?” This word is an adverb and means “consequently” or “for this reason.” My point is that what follows is based on what was just stated.

In this case, it means the “great cloud of witnesses” is referring to the Old Testament believers just listed in chapter 11 as our ultimate examples―mentors in facing the trials of the believing life. Their actions empower us and we gain spiritual courage to live as they lived when we face the tribulations that come our way.

In that process, we are presented with the metaphor of a runner casting off unnecessary weights that just hinder and slow us down. This is referring to the sins that we get entangled in. With Christ in our sights as the ultimate example in enduring the cross, and our brothers and sisters―both past and present―we can run this race with endurance.

It is fascinating to me that even on the cross, Christ looked to the ultimate result of his work on that cross with joy because of the result of delivering us from sin.

In our days of testing, may we remember those who have gone before us as well as those around us as we look to the ultimate example of victory in Christ our Savior.

It is my prayer that Christ is real in your life and you may know him and his word.

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

We can come to know Christ through confession of our sins and repentance (turning away from sin). Let me encourage you to do this by talking to God through prayer. Here is an idea of how you might do that:

"Dear God, I believe your son Jesus Christ died in my place on the cross and rose from the dead on the third day following his death. I confess my sins, all of them, to you now with a humble heart. I repent of those sins and ask you to empower me with your Holy Spirit in overcoming further sin. Amen”

If you prayed this or a similar prayer committing your life to Christ and becoming one of his followers, let me encourage you to find a good, Bible-believing church. If you live in the Weslaco/Rio Grand Valley area of Texas, let me invite you to the church I attend, Mid-Valley Assembly (www.midvalleyassembly.com).

Begin talking to God in prayer and reading the Bible daily. A good way to begin to read the Bible is to start with the Book of John in the New Testament.

Feel very free in connecting with me if you need any further help in your walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. You can do this via the above email or facebook page or this web page.
